Bye Bye Blackbird

(While the song was probably not written about a redwing blackbird, this came to my mind when I was capturing these visitors to the feeder.)

Pack up all my care and woe,
Here I go,
Singing low,
Bye bye blackbird,
Where somebody waits for me,
Sugar's sweet, so is she,
Bye bye
Blackbird!

No one here can love or understand me,
Oh, what hard luck stories they all hand me,
Make my bed and light the light,
I'll be home late tonight,
Blackbird bye bye.

Make my bed and light the light,
I'll be home late tonight,
Leave you bird jet in the sky
Toodle oo!
Farewell!
Bye bye!

Blackbird
(Blackbird,Blackbird)
We'll take the flying little blackbird bye!

(And this little known but relevant later verse)

Blackbird, blackbird singing the blues all day
Right outside of my door.
Blackbird, blackbird why do you sit and say
There's no sunshine in store?
All through the winter you hung around.
Now I begin to feel homeward bound.
Blackbird, blackbird gotta be on my way
Where there's sunshine galore.

More on this 1926 song here.

These bird visitors, they are so different to ours...I have never heard of a Red Wing Blackbird! So pretty :)

  2. That's still a great song after 80+ years, Tabor. I've got the sheet music so have seen the other verse - but have not seen a red-winged blackbird in a long time. Think they need marshy places, and those are in short supply here.

  3. There is also the more recent song "blackbird" by Paul McCartney

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
    All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise.

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
    All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free.

    Blackbird fly Blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.

You were only waiting for this moment to arise.

  4. I like the last line, Val. "You were only waiting for this moment to arise."

Glad to hear from you once again. I really like these visits. Come sit on this log and tell me what you are thinking.
