That Quick Rush

I was spending Monday in a windowless classroom learning about how hard it is to keep the Chesapeake Bay clean...actually it was more about cleaning up the Bay since it is far, far, far from clean now.  New states' laws were passed setting higher environmental standards and the EPA is already under fire two years later from every industry you can imagine complaining that this law is too restrictive.  The data show significant water quality improvement since the laws went into effect.  Yet, we are moving toward that time in our lives when environmentalists will be muzzled and our children will routinely be having tumors removed or other traumatic health issues as a norm in order for money to continue to be made on the planet.

During the lunch break outside I watched over the small pond into the trees and was filled with spring joy as I saw two hawks (red-shouldered) setting up housekeeping in the nearby woods.

I seem to be so busy these days with family and other stuff, that this was a nice break!

  3. Very lovely hawks. It's worth fighting for water quality for them, too.

  5. And yet, none of my readers realizes that I must have had my telephoto along on this day....! Why?

  6. Money seems to have no ethics when it comes to the environment.

  7. We have a red shouldered that nests in the vicinity. I saw it fly over just the other day. In the summer when it doesn't rain it comes to drink and bathe in the small natural filter to the little water lily pond.

  8. What a wonderful header photo!
I do believe that clean up can happen. The Hudson River is an example. But it takes money and years of persistence. People like you could make it happen.
    I love the hawks!

  10. Lovely photos of the hawks. Yes, I worry also about our environment. I don't understand the thinking behind raping the land to gain profit. Then again, I do. Greed. I worry for children and beyond.

  11. I feel your pain about the environment. I am an independent voter -- I voted for Obama. I have been very disappointed in his promise to take care of the environment as nothing promising has happened in his administration. Your red tailed hawks sighting would give me a thrill too. Here is Obama's answer to how he is taking care of the environment. Scary to me. http://blogs.nicholas.duke.edu/thegreengrok/ -- barbara

  14. Beautiful birds! Yes, our steps towards cleaning up our environment are tiny and discouraging but we must keep it up. I had hoped for movement on the Kyoto Protocol with Obama's Whitehouse. I'm disappointed but will keep writing and trying.

  15. it never fails to amaze me what some people will do for money. destroy the very environment we need for good health.

we have red shouldered hawks here. I love them. the local one comes to the water lily pond filter to drink and bathe. I saw one the other day in the backyard perched on the column that the little bird bath rests on. the bird bath was on the ground, empty. I got a quick blurry shot through the screen before it majestically took flight.

  17. Loved this post, Tabor, but it is sobering to think that springtime in your part of the world is so far ahead of us here in the north.
